The Republican Party has its roots in Jackson, Michigan. On July 6, 1854, outraged over the passage of the Kansas-Nabraska Act (which opened new territories to slavery), well over one thousand citizens met “under the oaks” to denounce slavery, develop a platform and adopt the Republican party name.
